We need more holidays....

We're way too stingy with our holidays in America. I mean, in Europe, every other day is Saint-so-and-so's day, and if it happens to be the patron saint of your town--big party for like a whole week! Now, don't get me wrong, a few of my favorite places in the U.S. know how to do it right. Fantasy Fest in Key West goes on for a whole week (though most people don't see more than the Saturday parade.....and even at that it's doubtful that they "see" it), and in Tampa we celebrate the invasion of our city by the pirate Jose Gaspar with a couple of different parades. Overall, though, I think we're way too caught up with the rat race. Personally, I'm very happy about the 4th of July holiday, since I am getting some laundry done and will actually get two full days off. Chad and I have been invited to watch fireworks from the roof of The World's Fastest Game, which should also make for an excellent time. Unfortunately, though, it will be back to document review and data entry Tuesday morning. Barf.

And one more thing-- what the hell ever happened to Columbus day?? In Catholic school we used to make Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria boats out of hot dog buns and egg salad. Now all of a sudden we're too freaked out about the raping and pillaging of the natives that we can't celebrate the discovery of our great nation? (And come on-- we're still raping and pillaging, just on different terms....and people seem to be OK with that!) Argh.
